the importance of being dalli

So....you write a story....infact you've re written it a number of times and it seems bullet proof, your ready, thumbnails at hand and pitch your story to your tutor who simply replies with a wince and a "mmm well"

your life is over right? NO!

its a painful process this re-writing business but heres a list to remember WHY its all GOOD...

because the knocks make us stronger

the writing imporves

the idea becomes better

the characters motives more developed

the overall piece more worth while

the jounrey worth its wait

so cheers dan dalli for being constant support to our year, your infinate knowledge helps us improve day by day into hopefully becoming successful film makers/storytellers.

So heres a look at the thumbnails we showed Dalli....

and heres his thoughts...

the beginning poses far too many questions for the audience which would prevent them from sitting there and enjoying the story. The whole human hands is a nice thought but you would have to deal with all the gnomes freezing when they came round and surely by the time they came out of the garden they would have seen the Hero on his way round, the human catching up/overtaking the gnome...see....lots of problems already!

the gun - not in favour of Macho having a weapon at all. Dalli thinks this is a real low point to the story, an overused prop thats in there for the sake of it whereas Machos character should tell us who he is. There would need to be alternative means for how he's defeated then as its only by accident Hero defeats him and not outsmarting him like we actually want.

how Macho's defeated - Dalli thought it was an anti climax to have the villan just run off like a baby and seemed to suggest it was the only way out of solving the problem. He suggested looking back over old fairytales to get a better understanding of defeating the villan as this idea is a little wishy washy. At the moment, these ideas are preventing full audience connections to the characters, were not truely for the Hero and not totally against the villan.

the football - Dalli just disklikes. Im fine with the football in all honesty as it does provide us with the brilliant ending but Dalli does have a point (as a few other course members have also stated) it seems to be an act of god, a total o and then this solves it all...ta da....bit of a cheat.

So as you can see...we got stuff to rework but theres gems in this that Im sure will remain with us....we'll get there guys :)
